Part of the charm of Skyros is that it runs on its own rhythm, not the mainland’s. The flip side is that ferries, flights and buses follow seasonal timetables that can change with the weather and with demand. A little confirmation close to your trip saves all the friction later.

In short: Skyros’s ferry, flights and buses run on seasonal schedules that can shift with weather and demand, so confirm the details close to your dates. Check the Skyros Shipping Company for the Kymi to Linaria ferry, Olympic Air (from Athens) and Sky Express (seasonal, from Thessaloniki) for flights, KTEL for the mainland bus, and the Municipality of Skyros and active local channels for last-minute announcements.

Why the schedules move

Three things reshape the timetable through the year. Season is the big one: sailings and flights are far more frequent from June to September and thin out sharply in winter. Weather matters too, the summer meltemi wind (see Kalamitsa) can occasionally delay or cancel a crossing. And demand spikes around the Carnival and mid-August, when extra sailings and larger aircraft are sometimes added. None of this is a problem if you check before you commit.

The ferry

The Kymi to Linaria crossing is run year-round by the Skyros Shipping Company aboard the Achilleas, with more frequent sailings in summer. For the current timetable, and for any weather-related changes, the company is the source of truth: sne.gr. In high season the company prints a seasonal schedule leaflet, and the local municipality posts changes when they happen. If the forecast looks windy around your travel day, check the evening before. For the full route comparison, see Athens to Skyros.

The flights

Skyros has its own airport in the north of the island, served by short domestic flights of roughly 40 minutes from Athens (currently operated by Olympic Air, olympicair.com) and by seasonal flights from Thessaloniki (Sky Express, skyexpress.gr). A small number of seasonal international charters also come and go from year to year. Because the programme is limited and changes each season, confirm days and times directly with the airline before you plan around a flight.

Buses and transfers

From Athens without a car, the KTEL intercity bus reaches Kymi via Chalkida, timed to connect with the ferry; confirm the current coordination for your date. On the island itself, a seasonal local bus meets ferries and serves the main villages, and taxis are available but few, so it is worth arranging port and airport transfers in advance, especially for early or late arrivals. If you would rather be independent, see renting a car or scooter.

Last-minute, on-the-ground updates

For genuinely current news, a cancelled sailing, an added flight, a shifted bus, the Municipality of Skyros (Δήμος Σκύρου) posts official announcements, and the island’s active community channels tend to carry the same information quickly. These are the closest thing to a local noticeboard, useful for the final 48 hours before you travel.

A simple pre-trip checklist

  • Reconfirm your ferry or flight a few days ahead, and again the evening before if it is windy.
  • Book early for July, August and Carnival, when both boats and beds fill up.
  • Arrange transfers for the port or airport, particularly for late arrivals.
  • Keep some cash, useful for taxis, small tavernas and boat trips.
  • Plan around the best months for the calmest travel and sea.
