Skyros has a long, gentle season. Because it is harder to reach than the famous islands, it never has a true “high season” crush, which means the question is less about avoiding crowds and more about the kind of summer you want: green and empty, warm and lively, or soft and golden.

In short: The best months to visit Skyros are June to October. June is warm, green and gloriously quiet; July and August bring the warmest sea and the most life (with the occasional meltemi wind); September is many people’s favourite, with hot water and softer light; October is calm and contemplative. For the famous Carnival, come in February.

June, green and empty

Early summer is a quiet gift. The island is still green from spring, wildflowers linger, and the sea is warm enough to swim. Tavernas are open but unhurried, and the beaches below Chora feel like your own. If your idea of a holiday is space and calm, June is hard to beat. Days are long and the light is soft well into the evening.

July and August, warm and lively

The peak weeks are when the sea is at its warmest and the island is at its most sociable, yet still calm by Greek-island standards. This is the season of village festivals (panigyria), late dinners and full tavernas. Expect the meltemi, the dry north wind that can blow for a few days at a time, cooling the air and drawing windsurfers to the southern bays around Kalamitsa. Book your ferry or flight and a place to stay well ahead for these weeks.

September, the connoisseur’s month

Ask a returning visitor and many will name September. The sea holds its summer warmth, the fierce light of August softens, the winds usually ease, and the crowds thin. Long swims, long lunches and golden evenings define the month. It is, for many, the most beautiful time to be on Skyros.

October, slow and contemplative

By October the island exhales. Swimming is still possible early in the month, the walking is wonderful in the cooler air, and the tavernas that remain open are quiet and welcoming. Some businesses begin to wind down toward month’s end, so it suits the independent traveller who wants stillness above all, perfect for walks and nature.

A note on the off-season

Outside the summer, the island turns inward, but there is one extraordinary exception: the Skyros Carnival in February, one of Greece’s oldest and most striking traditions. It is a winter, weather-dependent event with limited accommodation, so plan carefully if it is your reason to come.
