Renting a Car or Scooter on Skyros
A practical guide to renting a car or scooter on Skyros, why you'll want one, the car-free rule in Chora, the winding roads, and getting to the wild south and west coast.
Last updated 29 June 2026
Skyros is small, but its best corners, the wild south, the green west coast, the remote beaches, are spread out and reached by winding roads. A little independence on wheels transforms the trip.
In short: Hire a car or scooter to reach Skyros’s wild south, west coast and northern beaches; distances are short but the roads are winding, so allow time. Chora is car-free, you’ll park at the edge and walk up. If you’d rather not drive, base yourself near Molos or Magazia, where beaches, tavernas and Chora are within easy reach.
Do you need a car?
It depends on your base. Stay near Magazia or Molos and you can happily spend a relaxed holiday without one, beaches, tavernas and a walk up to Chora are all close. But to explore the wild south, the west coast around Atsitsa or the quieter northern beaches, a vehicle makes all the difference.
Car or scooter?
- A car suits families, longer drives to the south and west, and days when the meltemi wind makes a scooter less pleasant.
- A scooter or quad is fun and economical for couples and confident riders staying near the centre, but the rougher roads to remote beaches demand care.
Book ahead in July and August, when the small local fleets fill up. Bringing your own car on the ferry from Kymi is also an option if you want complete freedom.
Driving on Skyros
The roads are short but winding, and some routes to remote beaches turn to rough track, take them slowly and keep an eye on your fuel, as filling stations are few. Remember that Chora is car-free: leave the car below the village and continue on foot up the cobbled lanes. Off-road and 4x4 routes open up the far corners for the adventurous.
