Behind almost everything you can still see of old Skyros, the costumes, the carved furniture, the reconstructed island home, stands one man’s determination not to let it disappear. His name was Manos Faltaits.
In short: Manos Faltaits was a painter and folklorist who, in 1964, turned his family’s 19th-century mansion in Chora into the Faltaits Folklore Museum, one of the first local folklore museums in Greece. His mission was to rescue and record the traditions of Skyros, the crafts, costumes, books and everyday life, before modern change swept them away.
The mission
By the mid-twentieth century, island traditions across Greece were under pressure from a fast-changing world. Faltaits saw what was being lost, and acted. In 1964 he founded a museum in his own family home, a fine 19th-century mansion high in Chora, and filled it with the material culture of the island: costumes, carved furniture, ceramics, embroidery, rare books, manuscripts and photographs, right down to an authentic reconstruction of a traditional Skyrian house. It was among the earliest local folklore museums in the country, and a model for others.
Why it still matters
Much of what makes Skyros legible to a visitor today, the ability to walk into a room and understand how islanders lived, dressed and made things, exists because Faltaits gathered and cared for it when few others thought to. The museum his family still runs is not a dusty archive but a living key to the island: an hour there and the whole of Chora and its culture makes sense.
Visiting his legacy
The Faltaits Museum remains high in Chora, near the main square and the path to the castle. Visiting is the best way to honour the work: to see the costumes, the wood-carving, the embroidery and the pottery he helped save, gathered under one roof.
