At the very top of Chora, within the walls of the Byzantine castle, stands the church that has watched over Skyros for more than a thousand years: the Monastery of Agios Georgios, dedicated to the island’s patron saint.

In short: The Monastery of Agios Georgios (Saint George) sits on the first level of the castle (Kastro) above Chora, at the summit of the town. Founded in 963 AD, it is dedicated to the patron saint of Skyros and is the spiritual heart of the island, reached by the climb up through the car-free lanes.

History

The monastery was founded in 963, in the Byzantine centuries when the island’s defences rose on the high rock above the town. It is dedicated to Saint George (Agios Georgios), the patron saint of Skyros, and stands on the first level of the castle (Kastro), alongside stretches of medieval fortification. For over a millennium it has been the focus of the island’s faith and, in times of danger, part of its refuge.

What to see

The climb rewards you twice over: with the church and monastery themselves, and with the view. From the castle terrace the whole of Magazia and the open Aegean spread out below, the same panorama that has drawn islanders and visitors up here for centuries. Inside the walls you’ll find the monastery, the restored church of the Episkopi nearby, medieval cisterns and ruins, all worth an unhurried look.

Visiting

The monastery is reached on foot, at the top of the walk up through Chora. Dress respectfully, as at any working religious site, and time the climb for the late afternoon, when the light on the walls is at its most beautiful. Saint George’s feast day is marked with celebration, one of the island’s festivals.
