Inside the walls you’ll find the monastery, the restored church of the Episkopi nearby, medieval cisterns and ruins, all worth an unhurried look.

The monastery is reached on foot, at the top of the walk up through Chora. Dress respectfully, as at any working religious site, and time the climb for the late afternoon, when the light on the walls is at its most beautiful. Saint George’s feast day is marked with celebration, one of the island’s festivals.
