If the Carnival is the island’s wildest festival, Easter is its deepest. Orthodox Easter is the most important feast of the Greek year, and on a small, traditional island like Skyros it is felt in every lane and doorway.

In short: Orthodox Easter is the high point of the Skyrian spring, more solemn and more heartfelt than any summer festival. Expect Holy Week services, the Good Friday Epitaphios procession through Chora, the midnight Resurrection with candles and fireworks, and a Sunday of feasting on roast lamb. Dates follow the Orthodox calendar and usually fall in April or May.

Holy Week

The week before Easter builds slowly. Churches fill, the town quietens, and preparations begin in every home. On Good Friday, the Epitaphios, a flower-decked bier representing the tomb of Christ, is carried in a candlelit procession through the lanes of Chora, followed by much of the island. It is one of the most moving sights of the Greek year, and on Skyros, in the narrow whitewashed streets, especially so.

The midnight Resurrection

The heart of it comes late on Holy Saturday. Just before midnight the churches darken; then the priest brings out the holy flame, and light passes from candle to candle through the crowd until the whole square glows. At midnight the bells ring, fireworks crack over the town, and everyone greets one another with Christos Anesti, “Christ is risen”. People carry their lit candles home through the dark streets to bless the house.

Easter Sunday

Sunday is for feasting. The traditional meal is roast lamb or goat, cooked slowly and shared among family and friends, along with red-dyed eggs, fresh bread and local wine. It is warm, generous and unhurried, the spirit of the whole island distilled into a single long lunch.

Visiting at Easter

  • It is spring, not summer: cooler, greener, with the island at its most beautiful and least crowded.
  • Book ahead: rooms are in demand as Greeks travel home for Easter.
  • Join in respectfully: attend a service, follow the procession, and accept the hospitality that comes your way.
