Skyros vs the Other Sporades: Skopelos, Alonnisos & Skiathos
How Skyros compares to the other Sporades islands, Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos. Why Skyros is the odd one out, and which island suits which traveller.
Last updated 29 June 2026
Skyros is counted among the Sporades, but anyone who knows the group will tell you it is the outsider. Set apart from the others by geography and character, it offers something the northern three do not.
In short: The Sporades are four main islands. Skiathos is the busy, beach-and-nightlife hub with an airport; Skopelos is green, pretty and film-famous (Mamma Mia); Alonnisos is quiet and wild, ringed by a marine park. Skyros sits apart to the south-east, harder to reach, with its own horse, crafts and Carnival. Choose Skyros for authenticity and calm over the connected, greener northern trio.
The northern three
Skiathos, Skopelos and Alonnisos lie close together in the north, easily hopped between by frequent ferries.
- Skiathos is the lively one: an international airport, famous beaches like Koukounaries, busy nightlife and the most tourism of the group.
- Skopelos is lush and traditional, densely green, with a beautiful hilltop town and the clifftop chapel made famous by Mamma Mia.
- Alonnisos is the quiet, unspoilt one, at the heart of a National Marine Park protecting monk seals and dolphins, loved by walkers and nature travellers.
Why Skyros is different
Skyros doesn’t sit with the others. It lies further south-east, across a stretch of open sea, and is reached by its own ferry from Kymi rather than the northern network. That separation has kept it distinct in every way: a fiercely independent culture, the rare Skyrian horse, its own wood-carving and Carnival, and a landscape split between green pine north and wild, rocky south. It is the least touristy and most singular of the four.

FAQ
Is Skyros part of the Sporades? Yes, but it sits apart to the south-east, reached separately by ferry from Kymi rather than through the northern islands.
Which Sporades island is the quietest? Alonnisos in the north is famously quiet, but Skyros is the least touristy and most culturally distinct of the four.
Can I island-hop from Skyros to the other Sporades? Not easily, Skyros is on a separate route via Kymi, so it’s best visited as a destination in itself rather than as part of a northern-Sporades hop.
