Mouries Farm — Skyrian Horses
Kalikri
The conservation farm for the rare Skyrian horse, an ancient island breed. Meet the herd, learn the story and help save it.
The Skyrian horse is an ancient Greek breed that survives only on Skyros, small, gentle and long-maned, with just a few hundred left in the world. At Mouries Farm, near Kalikri on the road to Kalamitsa, the family runs a breeding and conservation centre where you can meet the horses up close, learn how the breed is tied to Achilles, Alexander and the Parthenon frieze, and hear about the threats it faces on Mount Kochilas. Family-friendly visits, hippotherapy and volunteering are all part of the work; there is also a small farm restaurant. A memorable, meaningful stop for anyone travelling with children or simply curious about the island's living heritage.
